Weaning is one of those milestones that feels both exciting and nerve-wracking. You’ve finally mastered milk feeds — and suddenly, it’s time to introduce food!
When should you start?
The NHS recommends starting around six months, when babies can sit up and show interest in what you’re eating. Every baby’s different, but waiting until they can hold their head steady and coordinate chewing helps keep things safe.
Baby-led or spoon-fed?
There’s no single “right” way. Some parents prefer spoon-feeding smooth purées, while others let babies explore with their fingers — baby-led weaning (BLW). You can even do a bit of both! The goal is to help them experience flavour, texture, and independence.
Setting up for success
Choose tools that make mealtimes simple. A suction bowl like our Tidy Tot Bowl helps keep food where it belongs (mostly). The bamboo-handled silicone spoon is gentle on gums and easy to grip — perfect for curious hands.
Stick to simple, single foods first: mashed sweet potato, banana, or avocado. Introduce one at a time to watch for allergies. And remember, messy eating is part of the learning!
Mealtime mindset
Weaning isn’t about calories yet — it’s about discovery. Keep mealtimes relaxed, eat together, and offer encouragement rather than pressure. Babies learn best when it’s fun.
Soon enough, you’ll look back on those early meals with fondness — even the ones that ended in food-covered walls.
